Located in the heart of the Rutherford bench, Staglin Family Vineyard enjoys some of the Napa Valley's finest wine-producing terrain. Hugh Johnson states in The World Atlas of Wine, "If there is a golden slope in California, one particular locality where wine of a recognizable type and often marvelous quality has been made since records start, it is the gentle foothill slope known as the Rutherford Bench." The region's igneous topsoils have washed down from the extinct volcano Mt. St. John over thousands of years, and provide a fine red gravelly loam, ideal for efficient drainage.
